Admin Post: Nomination Suggestion & Discussion Post
2016-05-15 04:48 pmWe've had a few requests for a post to discuss/suggest/etc. potential pairings for nomination, so here is that space. Have more that you want to see nominated than you have space for? Interested in knowing what other people might be nominating so you can start thinking of what you might offer or request? Open space to do all of that here.

(I see someone else in the tagset nominating Kamen Rider and Sentai, come say something???)

Date: 2016-05-17 10:43 pm (UTC)Psmith! (the p is silent, as in ptarmigan, or pneumonia)
Date: 2016-05-17 12:55 pm (UTC)These are short, gently humorous novels about two best friends and the hijinks they get up to in early 20th century England--first as boarding school roommates, then as coworkers and roommates in London, then on a trip to NYC during their university years. Psmith is a whimsically eccentric mastermind. Mike is a practical-minded, slightly shy everyman. They love each other so much!! And are super repressed about it!! If you like quietly self-sacrificing devotion, this is the ship for you. If you like odd couples, this is the ship for you. If you like Brideshead Revisited-style romantic friendships, this is the ship for you.
You can get these books for free on either Gutenberg or Amazon. You only really need to read the first two to be able to write it. The order is "Mike & Psmith", then "Psmith in the City", then "Psmith, Journalist", then "Leave It to Psmith". I'm not a huge fan of "Psmith, Journalist", but you can enjoy the amazing shippiness of chapter 3 and the epilogue without any context. Mike doesn't appear in Leave It to Psmith, but Psmith is still completely obsessed with him, offering to commit grand larceny for his benefit.
Just skim through all the cricket if you don't care about cricket. It isn't important (spoiler alert: Mike always wins). If you aren't into boarding school tales, you can start with the second book, which is my favorite. I'll be honest; these books were written early in PG Wodehouse's career. If you're looking for technical brilliance on the level of the Jeeves&Wooster novels, you won't find it. But it doesn't matter. The boys' relationship is the main focus here, and it's so beautiful. And even PG Wodehouse's less brilliant work is still heads and shoulders better than 99% of any other authors' best works.

Date: 2016-05-17 06:24 pm (UTC)but then again if I hated everyone who dragged Baxter I wouldn't like anyone much, but if you recommend them, I'll pick up the others and read them on my flight next week!Re: Psmith! (the p is silent, as in ptarmigan, or pneumonia)
Date: 2016-05-17 07:58 pm (UTC)Definitely give Psmith another chance. He only got Baxter in trouble because he wanted to help Mike (who is my darling). The first two books are basically just about Psmith doing ridiculous things to either help Mike out of trouble or make his life better in some either way. It's weird and sweet. Enjoy!

Date: 2016-05-17 08:23 pm (UTC)*cough* I'm sure it's just an exception to the brilliance of Wodehouse. Other than Blandings and Jeeves, I've read his Bachelors Anonymous, and I adored every minute of it. I'm sure I'll love Psmith too!

Date: 2016-05-25 10:19 am (UTC)And as a recipient, I totally know what you mean. I always end up writing horrendously long letters. I try to cut it down, and I still end up with something that's probably twice as long as necessary. But these are my OTPs we're talking about. It is a very serious business, haha.
